1969: What a Supersonic Year, Baby!

Updated: Apr 15

Hold onto your hats, groovy cats, because 1969 wasn't just a year – it was a whole vibe. From giant leaps on the lunar surface to legendary music, it was also the year Solution Focused Brief Therapy entered the world. Oh, and I was born in August 1969 as well! So let's blast back to a time that continues to capture our imaginations.

Reaching for the Stars: A Moon Landing for the Ages
On July 20th, 1969, the world witnessed history unfold as Neil Armstrong uttered the now-iconic phrase, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." The Apollo 11 mission successfully landed humans on the moon for the first time, a scientific and technological marvel that pushed the boundaries of human achievement.

Awesome Music
1969 certainly wasn't just the year that Bryan Adams got his first real six string! Given to the world by The Beatles was the masterpiece that is Abbey Road. It featured iconic tracks like Come Together and Here Comes the Sun and, on the 'b-side', the greatest 24 minutes of music ever cut into a piece of humble vinyl. But, if that wasn't enough, on the very day I was born in August, topping the charts was Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones - how cool is that!

Concorde Makes its Debut:  Taking us back to the realm of innovation, the supersonic airliner Concorde made its maiden flight in 1969. So yet another beautiful, elegant, awe inspiring thing which came to this world in 1969!

Steve de Shazer Enters the Scene
But it wasn't only me and Concorde that was being born. While the world was buzzing with these larger-than-life events, a quieter revolution was brewing in the field of therapy. 1969 saw the beginning of Steve de Shazer's groundbreaking work on Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). What Steve gave the world is as amazing, wonderful, beautiful, liberating and magical as Abbey Road, man on The Moon, and Concorde. I feel that, deep down, in my core, as a child of 1969, I was born to do Solution Focused Therapy! Thank you, Steve de Shazer - I won't let you down!*

*and no, that wasn't intended as a Beatles pun, even though, incredibly, that song was also a child of 1969
